2nd workshop: Let’s play Maths!

1. Opening circle (10 min)

Big circle: How do you feel now, what happened to you during the last week?

2. Goat – wolf – cabbage (10 min)

The participants form two groups, each person gets a role: shepherd, goat, wolf, cabbage. If there are more people in a group, they can be the note-taker or the boat.

The facilitator explains that the shepherd has to take the goat, the wolf and the cabbage over the river. There is a boat, but it is so small, that the shepherd can only take either the goat, or the wolf, or the cabbage at one time. But if the wolf is left alone with the goat, it will eat the goat. If the goat is left alone with the cabbage, the goat will eat the cabbage. How can they cross the river without harm and with the least amount of paddling to and fro?

The groups have to act out the situation and find the solution.

(The solution: The shepherd takes the goat over the river, leaves it there. Then goes back, takes the wolf and leaves it there, but takes the goat with him. He leaves the goat, takes the cabbage to the wolf and finally goes back for the goat.)

3. Mistakes in recipes (25 min)

Participants work in groups. Each group gets the recipes in Annex 1.

All the recipes have a mistake. They have to find it and correct it.

Each group chooses a recipe they like. They get the flow chart in Annex 2. They try to create a similar flowchart about the preparation of the dish they chose.

The facilitator gives each group the ingredients of the coconut ball (and the necessary tools). The groups have to realize which recipe they should use and prepare it. They can eat it during the closing circle.

4. Maths labyrinth (10 min)

Participants work in groups. Each group gets the Maths labyrinth and the empty form in Annex 3. They have to prepare a similar labyrinth by making up another rule. If there is enough time, the groups solve each other’s Maths labyrinths.

5. Closing circle (5 min)
